New Work
DIS/CONNECT
We are limited by our own experiences and perspectives. When engaging with others, we filter their experiences through our own—connecting where we share common ground, and struggling to understand where opposing experiences or ideas are encountered.
Our expectations are inventions, based on past experiences, beliefs, or ideas of how we think or expect life should be. Each one of us is uniquely built from our own life experiences and when confronted with another person, we look for connections and understanding. It is what we do when encountering the opposite circumstance, the areas of disconnection, that challenges us to make room for new perspectives and ideas. This can be met with fear of our own experience being misunderstood or challenged. The decision to foster understanding or to force our own views, creating conflict, is presented. We can choose to connect or disconnect.
Disconnection is part of the human experience as relationships grow and change over time. Parent and child relationships transition through stages, constantly in flux. Our relationship with our own memories shifts. We age and gain new perspectives about old experiences; we find new connections and let go of others.
These new artworks explore the complicated connections between individuals and the relationship of the past upon the present. As we navigate our own lives, we create space for others. And as we choose to listen or to disconnect, we shape our world, creating a mix of intentional connections, disconnects, and unintended consequences.
